Mel’s doubts reminded Meiru of her own, back when she’d just been an ordinary girl trying not to be left behind by her extraordinary friends. Eventually, the issue had been forced, and she’d resolved to fight; but she’d sacrificed a lot to fill the shoes that had been left empty, and she wouldn’t wish that level of effort on Mel.
“It seems like we’re the only ones who feel it when we wind up fighting something bad, sometimes,” she said instead, half-remembering a long-ago conversation. “We’re the only ones who feel like we’ve made a mistake. But I think everyone does, when they’re alone, even if they’re good at hiding it.”
Now she was remembering her conversation with Pat at the hospital, how ashamed she’d felt at her conduct. “I nearly left the chatroom, too,” she confessed. “I thought I should’ve realized how things were going to go and taken charge, even if it was that tall Netto’s world we were going to. And since I didn’t, I thought I had just run in and made everything worse, and I was really embarrassed. I thought everyone else would see it that way, too. But then I found out Pat felt the same way. And if both of us did okay, then I think you did just fine, too.”
“…What about that Nick guy?” Roll asked after a moment.
“He does seem to have it suspiciously together,” Meiru said with a sly smile before abruptly dismissing the charges. “But, nah, it’s not on him either.” She’d gotten quite a ways away from the point! “Anyway, I feel like it’s really up to you if you wanna take a break. But I don’t think you have to.”
“I get the sense Dragonman’s not taking a break, though, and that’s fine, too!” Roll added.
